Choosing Paint Colors that Work In Your Home

Neville Doors (After)

What are your walls telling you? Wall colors speak to us in their own language. There is an entire color psychology with regards to color choices and many studies have been done on what colors are best in what settings and for particular mood enhancement needs. The color choice that you decide on will ultimately set the tone and create that first impression that someone has walking into your home. Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering your next paint color!

Eye Test: Color can impact strong feelings and moods. Here is a typical color chart to help you decipher.

RED RED:  Strong, Passionate, Dynamic, Warmth, Youthful, Daring

PINK PINK:  Playful, Loving, Romantic, Faithful, Beauty, Sensitivity

WHITE WHITE: Cold, Crisp, Cleanliness, Purity, Perfection, Innocent

BROWN BROWN:  Comfortable, Earthy, Natural, Reliable, Genuine

ORANGE ORANGE: Assertive, Energetic, Enthusiasm, Creative

YELLOW YELLOW: Cheerful, Bright, Sunshine, Optimistic, Happiness

GREEN GREEN: New, Refreshing, Growth, Healing, Harmony

BLUE BLUE: Secure, Relaxing, Calming, Trusting, Loyal, Confident

GRAY GRAY: Sophisticated, Conservative, Serious, Balanced, Maturity

PURPLE PURPLE: Dignified, Elegant, Royalty, Magical, Mysterious, Wisdom

Influences: Choosing a paint color from a fan deck is one thing, but seeing it on a wall in proper lighting is another. Or on a wall that has varying lighting patterns depending on the time day. Many things can go into your decision of which scheme to choose. What color is the flooring? Shade and texture of cabinetry? Color combination on the countertops? All of these things when combined with a light source in a space will pull different hues, cast different reflections or can even mute/intensify.

Undertones: Identifying the undertone of your space is important. Are the colors in your room yellow or red based, or do you have a green undertone? Light undertones can be mixed successfully, however they will not complement each other.

Trends: During strong economical eras, bold color choices tend to be more accepted. Whereas in a state of difficult or modest times in the world, warmer more comforting and earthy tones seem to be preferred more.

With hundreds of different shades of off-white alone, picking colors is definitely not for the weary. Hopefully this has given you something to think about when it comes to choosing your next scheme.
