Kitchen Remodeling Tips and Tricks

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare: investing thousands of dollars into a kitchen remodel in Phoenix… and then hating the end result.

It happens more often than you think. Sometimes a homeowner didn’t foresee that a certain feature would be irritating and cumbersome rather than useful. In other cases, poor planning and design leads to unexpected problems. Sometimes it’s the fault of a contractor who uses poor-quality materials or sacrifices quality to rush through a job.

The good news is that many of these kitchen renovation nightmares are largely avoidable. Here are four tips and tricks for getting a start on creating a kitchen you love…

Put Function First

When you’re planning your kitchen remodel in Phoenix, you’ll want to start by designing with function in mind. For example, what kind of work zones do you need to create? How much storage do you realistically need? Will you be entertaining and/or eating in your kitchen, or is the kitchen only used for cooking?

Once you figure out how you’ll use your kitchen, then you can plan the design elements that meet your functional goals. After that, you can incorporate the design elements which meet your aesthetic goals.

Be Realistic About Storage

How much storage space do you really need? If your current spaces are overflowing, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need more space. Instead, it may just mean that you need to more efficiently organize your existing space.

However, you also don’t want to get caught with too little storage. For example, if you plan to replace your existing kitchen cabinets, then opt for cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. Not only do you get more storage space, but you also eliminate that unused space at the top of the cabinets that collects dust.

Install Work Lights

Overhead lighting usually isn’t enough to give you enough illumination to see into every corner of your kitchen. That’s why you need to install lights directly over your work areas.

For example, you can install lighting under the cabinets to shine down on your prep area, as well as lighting above the stove and sink to illuminate cooking and clean up. You’ll also want to have lighting install which allows you to easily see what’s in the far reaches of your cabinets.
